Time Out for March

This is the mid-point between two mighty events that are part of people’s daily lives in this month. I am not talking about Spring which bounces in on Friday. One event , St. Patrick’s Day is a universal happening. It really celebrates the life of a person who visited the island of Ireland. Almost singlehandedly, at least that is what the legend says, he told all the people about the Christian god and they all believed and became strong advocates for the Catholic Church. We who are living in this era recognise how much these people cared for their country, their faith and each other. No town, city or country ignores the chance to celebrate this world famous saint.

On March 19th another holy man is honored by the same persons who brought you St. Pat. He was quiet, an accomplished carpenter, and the foster father of the baby born on December 25th. His name appears with Mary and Jesus in the Gospels before, during, and after, the birth of the child. Quietly he welcomes Mary into his life. The three Kings probably appear on his doorstep. He brings his wife and step-son safely into Egypt to escape the evil king of Isreal. Then he brings them to Galilee from Egypt for their safety.

Today in a world that needs real men who honor women and are role models for their children we have St. Joseph, who embraced his family as long as he was with them. What a wonderful father and stepfather he was! And how much we need this kind of role model today.

So there we have them–St. Patrick with whom we celebrate fun and festivities and St. Joseph, stepdad and silent protector of families, women, and children. What wonderful role models they are for the modern world.
